More Than 20,000 Students Participate in 2002 Hearts for the Holidays Campaign
GAINESVILLE, February 1, 2003 — Steven D. Cohen, National Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, announced that more than 20,000 students at thirty-five colleges and universities throughout the United States, Australia, Ghana, and Nepal participated in the 2002 Hearts for the Holidays Campaign.
This completely student-run service campaign, which ran from November 1st to December 20th, provided students with the opportunity to design holiday cards for pediatric cancer patients undergoing treatment during the holidays.
“I am pleased that so many students participated in this year’s campaign,” said Cohen. “By taking just a few minutes out of their day to create a holiday card, students around the world helped make the holidays much brighter for patients and their families.”
Keisha Lindsay, 2002 Hearts for the Holidays Campaign Chair, said the program gave students a unique perspective by reminding them of the obstacles thousands of children and young adults are facing.
"Hearts for the Holidays raised awareness among college students by making them think about the young men and women who are living with cancer," Lindsay said. "Our campaign encouraged students to put aside their own problems and think about someone who really faces adversity."
Since the program's inception in the fall of 2000, more than 50,000 students have participated in the Hearts for the Holidays Campaign.
The annual Hearts for the Holidays Campaign is one of the many programs pioneered by Friends for Life of America to impact the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families. To find out more about Friends for Life of America, please visit http://www.friendsforlife.com.
