Kim Burbage arrived at the University of Florida eager to make a difference. “Everyone needs a smile,” says the Marco Island resident. By perusing the infamous big black book, a compilation of all registered campus organizations, Kim discovered Friends for Life of America. She needed to do something – and it needed to involve kids. After attending her first Friends for Life of America meeting, she simply fell in love with the organization.

While she is involved in many Friends for Life of America programs, Kim especially enjoys volunteering at the Hope Lodge. Whether she is calling numbers during bingo night or simply preparing dinner, Kim enjoys spending time with the patients residing there. Kim believes that it is extremely important for everyone to impact the community in any way they can. “She certainly does her part,” said Katie O’Neil, Director of Community Outreach at the University of Florida Chapter. “She's always so willing to participate in all of our community service events. Whether we're flyering for Hearts for the Holidays or visiting patients at Shands Hospital, she shows up on time, with a smile, and with plenty of cheesecake!”

In addition to her involvement with Friends for Life of America, Kim also volunteers with Best Buddies and Special Bowlers. These programs provide opportunities for students to brighten the lives of mentally handicapped individuals.

Kim eventually would like to pursue a master’s degree in nursing and then work in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital. Her hobbies include spending time with children, dancing, and horseback riding.

Kim Burbage is a sophomore majoring in nursing at the University of Florida.
